HOW WE REVOLUTIONIZED THE DESIGN OF BALL SCREWS

Most Precision Motion with Absolute Zero Backlash

A number of years ago our company based in the U.S.A. was approached by a major defense contractor. They heard about our team’s capabilities and expertise and had a problem they were hoping we could solve. In short, they were struggling to find a ball screw solution to focus infrared optics. The ball screws they needed required super precision and the capacity to withstand very large dynamic axial loads with no backlash and extremely low friction. They hadn’t been able to find a solution and asked them to give it a try.

At first, it looked like “mission impossible,” but their team loves a challenge. They were determined to find the solution and this project was an opportunity to apply their manufacturing design and engineering expertise to an entirely new business. So, they rolled up our sleeves and got to work.

It’s worth noting here that if they had been experts in the field of ball screws or familiar with related existing technologies, they would have been less likely to succeed, because the application they were solving for required an unconventional approach.

The manufacturer began by reducing the rolling friction as well as the friction related to the recirculation of balls within the nut. They delivered a prototype and six weeks later delivered six working ball screws to the customer for testing and evaluation.

The team waited anxiously in our conference room while the customer’s engineers tested our ball screws for extreme dynamic loads and other requirements on their test stands.

The results were so successful that the customer asked them if they had perhaps seen their specifications before embarking on the project. The customer simply could not believe that a project this challenging could have been completed, designed and manufactured in six weeks.

Later the customer revealed that they had been working on the problem for three years with two major worldwide market leaders and could not achieve the needed results.

Needless to say the manufacturer could not have been more proud to have solved our customer’s problem. They received a thank you letter signed by their entire team and, along with the glowing feedback, earned themselves a devoted customer and advocate.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

Standard Ball Screw Actuator

The ball screw is an assembly that converts rotary motion to linear motion (or vice versa). Conventional ball screws consist of a ball screw and a ball nut packaged as an assembly with recirculating ball bearings. In our Ball Screws, our proprietary technology allows us to use specially designed helical grooves for larger axial static and dynamic loads than conventional ball screws.

The Ball Screws are optimized for very low rolling friction and have the lowest axial backlash in the industry. Our patent pending, proprietary technology offers the lowest pitch (0.25 MM) to achieve the best resolution in the industry for optical focusing and other applications requiring the highest precision.

We design and manufacture both custom, and standard ball screws. When a custom ball screw is needed, our engineers bring over 60 years of combined experience to work with customers to design a precision motion ball screw based on their unique requirements. Our standard ball screw models can be modified to fit many customer applications and can often be shipped within 24 hours. Our in-house design and manufacturing allows us to produce customized configurations for ball screws with short lead times and at high volumes while outperforming the competition in performance, delivery and price.

Customers in need of a custom ball screw for a specific application can easily submit an inquiry. The customer provides design requirements and drawings, if applicable.

STEP 4 PRODUCTION

MOST manufactures the custom ball screw according to specification and delivers the product to the customer in accordance with established delivery dates.

STEP 5 POST-PRODUCTION

We archive all post production records which are readily available to the customer upon request.
